Now we are ready to start.
Speaker 1
My friend likes people who aren’t afraid to be different from the majority of their race, age group etc. She hates seeing people who always share the same thoughts as others, no matter how intelligent they are because intelligence to her has always been about logical thinking no matter what you know. I agree with her and I like those who are able to draw their own conclusions and go against the norm. We’re not afraid to be labelled a deviant.
Speaker 2
My best friend and I have been friends for a long time and recently I’ve been noticing that we’re drifting apart. I think our friendship is very competitive even though we don’t show it on the outside or ever talk about it. We always try to one upon one another. We’ve had numerous fights throughout our history both verbal and physical but they weren’t anything that couldn’t be repaired. We both recently graduated from college and for a little while, we were both looking at a very uncertain future.
Speaker 3
My best friend is one of my classmates. I know I can rely on her. Even when our lives get busy we still make time to see each other. I can’t imagine going to school and not having her there. Since I am better in math and science and she is better in English and languages, we can always help each other if we get confused about a difficult homework assignment. We are lucky that we complement each other so well. I hope that our friendship will continue and be just as strong after we graduate from high school. We would like to study at the same university.
Speaker 4
My best friend’s name is Marcela. We have known each other since we were 8 years old. We both enjoy music, playing the guitar and singing. We like going to the cinema but sometimes can’t agree on which movie to see. We both like travelling, reading and swimming. Sometimes during the summer I go with her and her family to their summer house which is located next to a large lake. Whatever we’re doing, it’s always fun to be with her.
Speaker 5
I found my best friend at boarding school. She became the most important person in my life. She was always ready to encourage me, to comfort me. She was my biggest supporter in both the good and the bad. Unfortunately now we don’t live close by each other so I haven’t seen her for a long time. I cherish my memories of her so much. I will never give up hope that our paths are destined to cross again.
Speaker 6
My friend doesn’t have to work because his parents pay for his college and all his expenses. All he has to worry about is studying and doing his homework. Nevertheless, instead of using the time wisely, he always puts off doing his college work by saying that there is enough time to do it later. Moreover, almost every afternoon he watches television and talks on the phone with his friends. He prefers to study after eight o’clock at night, but this was the time his friends wanted to go out.
You have 15 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 15 seconds.) Now you will hear the texts again. (Repeat.) This is the end of the task. You now have 15 seconds to check your answers. (Pause 15 seconds.)
Which speaker says that…
A. she is missing her friend.
B. everyone should have her/his own opinion.
C. his friendship is fading.
D. her friend and she are interested in many of the same hobbies.
E. her friend doesn’t appreciate time and his parents’ help.
F. his/her friend looks beautiful.
G. her friend and she help each other.

2. READING
You are going to read a magazine article about the effects of fame. For statements 1-7 choose the answer A, B, C. Circle the right answer.
What Price Fame?
How do film stars cope with being famous? Does fame bring happiness? Rory Taylor takes a closer look at stardom and its effects on those lucky enough to have it.
After more than 20 years in the film industry Mel Gibson says that the biggest lesson he’s learned as an actor has been how important it is to have a loving family at his side. ‘When I started out in my career I was often referred to as «the sexiest man in the world» or some such nonsense. At the time, though, it went to my head and I really took to being a celebrity. However, after the initial euphoria I found that not only was I spending long periods away from home but I never had any time to myself, none of which made me particularly happy.’ His wife Robyn saw what was happening and came to the rescue; she simply told him to ‘stop, come home and take some time off.’
But Mel Gibson thinks it’s ten times worse for today’s young stars. He believes that the new breed of heart-throbs such as Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio have it much harder than he ever did. ‘The youngsters today receive constant attention from the media, which means they can’t do anything without seeing their picture all over the front page the next day.’
The experience of Cameron Diaz bears witness to that. All the time she was dating Matt Dillon she never felt her personal life was her own. ‘After a while we both got used to being chased by photographers, and having every aspect of our relationship analyzed by the media. But it meant we could never really lead a normal life together.’ The pressures of working together with Dillon on There’s Something About Mary were probably as much to blame for their painful and much publicized break-up as the sensation-seeking journalists, but all the same, Cameron has resolved to be more guarded about her private life and she now gives as little away as possible about her relationships.
Wild man of comedy, Jim Carrey, also complains about the lack of privacy. He remembers with anger the time he took some family photographs to be developed in a shop close to his $4 million Los Angeles home. ‘Two weeks later they were in the local newspaper. Someone in the shop obviously made a lot of money out of them.’ For Carrey, being a famous actor also means being a diplomat. ‘People may come up to you in the street when you’re in a really bad mood, and you have to talk to them as if you were delighted to see them. If not, word gets round that you’re a miserable human being and that’s how you’re remembered.’
Bruce Willis feels that too much importance is attached to what’s written in magazine articles, since most of it’s untrue anyway. He firmly believes he has a right to protect himself and his family from over-inquisitive reporters. ‘If the paparazzi start taking photos of my children and asking them questions, I just get in the way and teach them a few manners. Of course, they don’t take too kindly to this, and the public is given the impression from what they read that I’m arrogant and rude. It’s all very frustrating.’
Frustrating it may be, but how sorry should we feel for people like Willis? Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones certainly can’t complain about journalists: it is said they were paid £1 million by OK! magazine for allowing its photographers to take exclusive pictures of their wedding. Of course, being in the public eye does have its drawbacks, but these are nothing compared with the positive aspects of fame. After all, if the publicity and pressure of fame get too much for the
Douglas family, they can always escape to Michael’s large house on the beautiful Mediterranean island of Mallorca. Fame is a wonderful thing — as long as you can afford to get away from it!
7 Mel Gibson enjoyed his fame at first?

3. USE OF ENGLISH
Part 1
You are going to read the text about a strange girl Samantha. For questions 14- 21, change the form of the words given in brackets which you think fits best according to the text.
Silent Samantha
She walked into the room, 14___ (drag) her feet behind her, her hands dug deep into the pockets of her jeans, her shoulders and head slouched forward. She stared at the classroom floor for a few seconds as though mesmerized by it. Her long black hair hung down around her face preventing it from being 15___ (see) by the rest of the curious English students.
She moved her head slightly, revealing her pale white face 16___ (hide) beneath her hair, and 17___ (care) began to make her way towards the empty desk next to mine. She sat down slowly, as though she was in pain. «I hope you don’t mind me 18___ (sit) here», she said in a gentle voice. Then, she turned her head and stared out of the classroom window. What she was staring at I don’t know, but she only moved twice during the hour-long class. As soon as the bell rang, she picked up her bag, 19___ (throw) it over her left shoulder, and was gone.
The same thing happened week after week, she would enter the room, walk over to the window seat, sit down and then stare out of the window aimlessly. I often wondered what she was staring at but I never dared to ask 20__ (she). Sometimes, I would catch her eye after class, but she never said 21___ (any). The only thing I ever knew about her was her name — Samantha.

Successful Self-Starter
Andy Butler, Young Businessman of the Year, is definitely not your average 22-year-old. Far from it. He’s not planning a backpacking trip round the world, and he doesn’t go clubbing until three and then sleep until midday. He’s always been ambitious and not afraid of hard work. But he’s also had a dream and he’s made it all come true without any help from his parents.
Andy is boss of his own computer business, and he’s already made a small fortune. He told us how it all started. ‘I’ve always been fascinated by computers and it’s always been my dream to run my own company. So I read lots of computer magazines, and when I got fed up with washing neighbours’ cars at the age of 14, I put a small advert in the local paper: «Problems with your computer? Let me solve them for you. Ј15 per hour. No solution, no charge.» The phone never stopped ringing!
It seems I’d really discovered a gap In the market. Lots of people work from home nowadays and they invariably use PCs and the Internet. But PCs have a habit of going wrong and that’s where I came in, because they want them fixed — fast. When I arrived on my bike, people were amazed how young I was. Some of them didn’t trust me to take their valuable PCs to pieces, and I had to persuade them that I knew what I was doing. But they were happy enough when I fixed the problem.
Then, a few months later, I was at the dentist’s and I was telling him what I did. He immediately asked me to design a website for him. That’s really what got me started. I got a book and I more or less taught myself. It wasn’t too difficult. A week later his website was up and running and he was very happy with it. After that, word got around, and his friends and clients started ringing me up. And since then I’ve never looked back. I did computer studies at university and now I’m putting everything I’ve learnt into practice.
I can’t believe my luck. If you ask me, there’s nothing more exciting than having your own business. The company doesn’t fix computers. Instead, we specialize in website design and we’re taking on new clients every day. I work with some great people and they’re all about my age, so everything’s very informal. Sometimes I work 14 or 15 hours a day, but I don’t notice the time because I’m getting such a buzz from what I’m doing. I suppose I’m already a millionaire, but that isn’t the point. The main thing is ‘I’m enjoying it. And this is only the beginning!’

You Are What You Eat
There’s an old English saying, ‘You are what you eat’, meaning that if you eat badly you’ll probably end up behaving badly. In June 2002 the implication of this for crime and criminals was finally proved. For the first time, researchers came up with proof that what young criminals ate hugely affected their criminal behaviour.
The research was carried out in a British jail where young, violent criminals aged between 18 and 21 were in prison for an average of four years. Researchers observed the behaviour of 230 of these young prisoners for nine months. During that time they artfully recorded the number of times they broke prison rules, the trouble they caused, and in particular the fights they got Into. Then for the next nine months, half the prisoners were fed with special ‘healthy’ pills, which contained a number of vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients. The other prisoners were given dummy pills, which contained nothing nutritionally significant at all. Prison staff who gave out the pills didn’t know which dummy pills were and which the ‘real’ pills were.
The results caused a sensation. The improvement in the behaviour of those taking the ‘real’ healthy pills was huge. There was a reduction of 40% in violent behaviour. As one researcher put it, ‘We tend to forget that humans are physical as well as psychological beings, and putting poor fuel into the brain seems significantly to affect social behaviour.’
The implications are obvious. We could reduce crime dramatically by simply improving young people’s diet. It would also be a cheap and easy way of reducing crime and violence inside prison. The pills would cost less than Ј1 a day for each person, but it costs around Ј80 a day to keep someone in prison, and that’s without taking into account the costs of the crimes to their victims. As one crime expert put it, ‘It’s money well spent if it means that fewer crimes are committed.’
1. The research was carried out…
A. at the hospital;
B. in prison;
C. at school;
D. at the university.
2. Researchers observed the behavior of…
A. children;
B. old people;
C. young prisoners;
D. animals.
3. The prisoners were given…
A. pills;
B. fruits;
C. mixture;
D. drops.
4. The results caused…
A. a surprise;
B. an alarm;
C. sensation;
D. a smile.
5. The ‘healthy’ pills cost…
A. Ј 10 a day;
B. Ј 10 a week;
C. Ј 10 a month;
D. Ј 1 a day.
6. The facts show that…
A. diet doesn’t affect criminal behaviour ;

D. music doesn’t affect criminal behaviour.

Task 1.
You are going to read a newspaper article about sport. Choose the most suitable heading from the list A-l for each part (1-7) of the article. There is one extra heading which you do not need to use. There is an example at the beginning (0).
A A healthy option.
С Always play to win.
D On the other hand….
E Experiments in the past.
F A useful way to control violence.
G Too many expectations can lead to problems.
H A question of sport.
I Key question remains unanswered.
Sporting excellence: a worthwhile goal?
1. What is the point of sport? Whenever certain sporting stories are brought to our attention, we talk about them for days. Should we force children to do sport at school? Should the government spend more on sport? Is a famous football player’s broken leg a matter of importance?
2. The answer to the initial question is not easy to find. First we have to decide why we do sport. Fitness is the one benefit on which most people agree. Healthy people are happier and more capable of looking after themselves. Children who take plenty of exercise are more likely to become healthy adults
3. Traditionally, sport is considered a useful way of teaching people to contain aggressive feelings. In team sports, it also teaches people to work together. Sport helps to make society safer by teaching people to obey rules. It also prepares them for success at work, where it is necessary to compete.
4. Others have argued that sport encourages aggression and does nothing to control it. Children, therefore, should be taught to co-operate rather than compete. They should not have to compare themselves to others at school or on the sports field.
5. Many of these beliefs, popular in the 1960s, were put into practice with little success. Many countries that wanted to discourage children playing against each other did the opposite. Others produced «super athletes» with the help of drugs and money. They tried to create sportsmen who were unbeatable.
6. There are lessons to be learnt from this. Many of these «super athletes» faced problems. Too much pressure led to rained health. So, doing well at sport isn’t to do with how much effort an individual country puts in. A country should support its athletes, but achievement should not always be expected
7. But this still doesn’t answer the opening question. Is sport valuable to a child’s development? Is it a good way to relax or is it just a way of getting fit?
8. General agreement on these questions is unlikely because everyone’s experience of sports at school is different. Some feel their schooldays were ruined by sports lessons. Others feel they could not have survived without them. The government should perhaps concentrate on providing better opportunities for those who want them. Maybe this will prevent the sporting failures Britain is familiar with.
Task 2. You are going to read an article about an ice-skater. Seven sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences (A-H) the one that fits each gap (9-14). There is one extra sentence which you do not need to use. There is an example at the beginning (0).
We’ve given up everything to make our daughter a star
June and Malcolm Harding spent their life savings on their first home, and thought they were set for life. But just over a year later, June handed the keys back to the estate agent. Since then they’ve also sold most of their furniture.
What started as a way to stop Kelly being bored in the summer holiday has become the focus of all their lives. She won her first competition after only 10 weeks of skating lessons. Soon after, Kelly’s coach left Britain for Canada and her parting words changed the Harding’s lives for ever. «Find the money to keep Kelly on the ice,» she urged. «She’ll go all the way to the top.» From then on, there was no question — whatever it cost to make Kelly a winner, they’d find a way. 0 –D
9 — «I started skating when I was 10,» June said. «I saved all the money I could for lessons by doing errands for neighbours. But Mum and Dad were poor and when Mum saved to buy me boots, Dad said that was it… I never skated again. I wasn’t going to let that happen to Kelly.» They had to take Kelly out of school so she could practice more. As she was still only fourteen, they had to guarantee the local authorities she’d continue her studies until she was seventeen.
10
«I worked out we only got £500 for £5,000 worth of furniture — but at least it paid for some more lessons,» said June. «The only things we kept were the TV and video because we can never afford to go out. Luckily, our new accommodation is furnished. We took our car off the road because we can’t afford to run it. We haven’t had a phone for four months, or a holiday in six years.
11 —
Despite being permanently poor, June and Malcolm have no doubt they’re doing the right thing. «Just seeing Kelly on the ice, smiling and happy, makes it all worthwhile,» her father said.
12-
Kelly, now seventeen, was placed 13th in last year’s junior championship and has won nearly thirty competitions so far. «I know I’m very lucky,» she admits.
13
Her coach, a former British champion, is convinced she’ll go far. «I think she’ll make the Olympic squad in 1998,» she said. «Kelly is an exceptional girl — gifted and very hardworking.»
14 It’s unlikely that her mum will ever see her win, though, because she gets too nervous to watch. «People think we’re mad giving up everything,» continues June, «but we believe in our daughter … I’d do it all over again tomorrow.»
A «Mum and Dad have given up their own lives just for me and I’m determined not to let them down.»
В That meant the added cost of a private tutor at £140 a month.
С Kelly now hopes to make the final three in the British Ice Skating Championship.
D All to give their daughter Kelly the chance to become a world champion ice-skater.
E The last time I bought a dress was for my son John’s wedding last year.
F June has her own reasons for wanting Kelly’s success.
G However, all these sacrifices have not been enough.
H «Even if she doesn’t make it, she’ll have had the opportunity thousands of girls haven’t.»
Task 3. Choose the best answer to each question.
It has been documented that, almost twelve million years ago at the beginning of the Pliocene Age, a horse, about midway through its evolutionary development, crossed a land bridge where the Bering Straits are now located, from Alaska into the grasslands of Europe. The horse was the hipparion, about the size of a modern-day pony with three toes and specialized cheek teeth for grazing. In Europe the hipparion encountered another less advanced horse called the anchitheres, which had previously invaded Europe by the same route, probably during the Miocene Period. Less developed and smaller than the hipparion, the anchitheres was completely replaced by it. By the end of the Pleistocene Age both the anchitheres and the hipparion had become extinct in North America, where they had originated. In Europe they had evolved into an animal very similar to the horse as we know it today. It was the descendant of this horse that was brought by the European colonists to the Americas.
Both the hipparion and the anchitheres
(A) were the size of a modern pony
(B) were the native to North America
(C) migrated to Europe in the Pliocene Period
(D) had unspecialized teeth
According to this passage, the hipparions were
five-toed animals
not as highly developed as the anchitheres
larger than the anchitheres
about the size of a small dog
The author suggests that the hipparion and the anchitheres migrated to Europe
by means of a land route which is now non-existent
on the ships of European colonists
because of a very cold climate in North America
during the Miocene Period
This passage is mainly about
the evolution of the horse
the migration of horses
the modern-day pony
the replacement of the anchitheres by the hipparion
It can be concluded from this passage that the
Miocene Period was prior to the Pliocene
Pleistocene Period was prior to the Miocene
Pleistocene Period was prior to the Pliocene
Pliocene Period was prior to the Miocene

Task 3. True/False (6 points)
Look at the statements (14-19) below about entertainment for children in London. Read the text to decide if each statement is true or false. Put “T” or “F” on your answers.
Visiting London with children? Here’s a guide to some attractions for younger tourists.
The Barbican Centre has its annual children’s festival. Summer in the City, on 1-5 August. Each day’s timetable is handed out as you enter. It may include magic shows, face painting, hat making and music. One ticket (£ 4.50 for children, £1 for adults, and no children or adults allowed on their own) buys a full day’s activity so you can have a go at everything.
At the South Bank Centre young dancers can join in Sleeping Beauty workshops with the English National Ballet on 3 August. On 4 August Peter Badejo encourages all comers to join in African dance and there’s outdoor dance, theatre and music for all the family on the terraces around the Centre at weekends. For example, on 21August the Teatro Buendia from Cuba will present a show for children of all ages called An Elephant Takes Too Much Room.
At London Zoo there is a special exhibition about animals which have disappeared as well as animals in danger of disappearing. There are lifesize moving models of dinosaurs, but you can also see living examples of endangered species such as tigers and bird-eating spiders. While you may not want to get too near these, there are plenty of friendly animals in the new Children Zoo which will be happy to let you get close to them.
The Museum of the Moving Image is about the cinema. Its guides are actors dressed as cowboys and films stars. You can learn about film-making in special classes and there is a special exhibition at eye-level for very young children under one metre tall.
If adults are ready for a rest why not book Sunday lunch at the Russel Hotel? The Jumping Jelly Bean Club offers an exercise class (with qualified instructors) for children while you have a drink. Sit down to lunch together (£14.25 for adults, £3.95 for the children’s menu), then while you have your coffee, the Jumping Jelly Beaners watch children’s films. The Club is held every Sunday lunchtime and it’s free to children with families eating in the hotel.
14. The Barbican Center programme changes from day to day. 15. Children can be left at the Barbican Centre for the day. 16. At the South bank Centre there is dance from different parts of the world. 17. The children’s Zoo sells soft toy animals. 18. The Museum of the Moving Image is most suitable for older children. 19. It coasts £ 3.95 to join the Jumping Jelly Bean Club.
